United Airlines x Save The Bay: Uniting Communities and Climate Action

Save The Bay is deeply grateful to United Airlines, whose partnership helps nurture the plants in our nurseries, provides students with opportunities to explore the shoreline, and strengthens our ability to advocate for policies that protect both the people and wildlife of the Bay.

United’s mission is to connect people and unite the world. Their staff celebrate people and communities around the globe every day, and that’s why they understand the need for bold climate action.

United flies to 111 cities worldwide from San Francisco and will offer approximately 300 daily flights this summer – more than any other airline in the Bay Area! To offset the environmental impact of all that service, United is committed to reducing its emissions, so that we can continue to appreciate the wonders of this world today and into the future.

“We continue to embrace our goal to be net zero by 2050 by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 100% without relying on the use of voluntary carbon offsets,” says United’s CEO, Scott Kirby.

In 2023, United launched United Airlines Ventures Sustainable Flight Fund, committing over $200 million in investments from United and its corporate partners and over $450,000 in contributions from customers. The fund supports start-ups working on Sustainable Aviation Fuel research, production, and technology.

“We (also) realize there’s a limit to what a single company can do alone. That’s why we are continuing to seek opportunities to collaborate with other industries. We must reach across industries to develop coordinated efforts to accomplish what must be our collective goal of carbon neutrality,” Scott Kirby says.

As United increases its presence in the Bay Area, it’s also engaging local organizations working to make the Bay more resilient.

This month, United Airlines employees joined Save The Bay on Earth Day to remove 2,600 pounds of invasive species from our restoration sites! Volunteers also transplanted native species and learned about Bay ecology and the importance of wetlands.

This summer, we will bring a bit of our wetlands restoration work to United’s local headquarters at SFO, where their employees will help us clean native seeds to have a hands-on impact from where they work day to day.

Together, United Airlines and Save The Bay will continue to strengthen local ecosystems and communities against the effects of climate change and inspire a public commitment to our Bay.
