Planting at Mountain View A2W Pond!
Join us in planting native plants at our newest restoration site! The Mountain View A2W pond transition zone levee is part of the South Bay Salt Ponds Restoration Project. Just like our projects at the Ravenswood All American Canal and R4 levee, this project aims to restore tidal marsh wetlands to former industrial salt ponds that are now part of the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge. The levees cutting off the A2W pond from open bay waters was breached in January 2026, restoring tidal flow to the pond. The new Song Sparrow Spur trail was also created as part of the project, creating greater public access and bridges at spots where the levee was breached!
Our work restoring this wetland has only begun. We still have to fill the newly created marsh slope with native species for the nascent wetland to successfully provide wildlife habitat and coastal protection for our communities. This is where you come in! We need your help to put in the thousands of native plants that will bring this living levee to life!
Access Details: The worksite is an approximately 10 minute, 0.5 mile walk along the paved Bay Trail from the parking lot. There are flush toilets available at the Shoreline Golf Links at the parking lot. Accessing the site will require walking down a potentially slippery dirt slope off the side of the paved trail. Planting native plants will require bending over and hand digging soil with trowels. Holes will be pre-drilled by staff and volunteers will be filling them with plants and soil.
What to bring: Please dress according to the weather, bring a water bottle and a snack. Gloves, hand picks, foam kneepads and/or other necessary tools will be provided. Programs may be cancelled in the event of heavy winds, poor air quality and/or lightning. Weather is changeable in the Bay, so Save The Bay will make the call one hour before the start of program. Program participants will receive a cancellation email if the program is cancelled. Save The Bay strives to include volunteers of all abilities in our programs. If you have specific access needs, please reach out to hlim@savesfbay.org to coordinate.
