Long-term partnerships create lasting change, and Illumina has been an important partner in protecting and restoring San Francisco Bay. Through five consecutive years of grant support and employee volunteerism, the company has demonstrated a commitment to sustainability that extends beyond the workplace and into our communities.

Illumina’s support strengthens Save The Bay’s work, including our Habitat Restoration & Community Education Program. Last year, we engaged more than 2,500 Bay Area residents through hands-on shoreline restoration and environmental education, including 980 students who participated in STEM field trips.
Since 2021, Illumina employees have joined Save The Bay twice each year at Eden Landing Ecological Reserve in Hayward, just minutes from the company’s campus. Together, we restore native habitat by planting native seedlings, removing invasive weeds, and clearing trash. These volunteer days offer employees a meaningful opportunity to learn about Bay ecology, build a hands-on connection with the shoreline, and contribute directly to its restoration.

This partnership reflects Illumina’s broader commitment to environmental stewardship. In its 2025 Corporate Responsibility Report, the company highlights the belief “that human health and environmental health are fundamentally linked,” a philosophy that guides its operations around the world.
Since 2019, Illumina has reduced product packaging by nearly 90%, cut Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 74%, and powered its global operations with 100% renewable electricity for four consecutive years.
Those achievements helped earn recognition as one of TIME’s World’s Most Sustainable Companies for the second year in a row, and the company has set an ambitious goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its operations and value chain by 2050.
“Everyone on our team looks beyond the obvious to find a new way – from scientific breakthrough to protecting the planet,” stated Pat Leckman, Illumina’s Chief People Officer.

We are grateful for Illumina’s ongoing partnership and investment in a healthier, more resilient San Francisco Bay. Together, we’re restoring habitat, inspiring future environmental leaders, and building a more sustainable region for generations to come.
