Engaging the Community to Design Multi-benefit Green Infrastructure Projects

Recommendation:

Green infrastructure can provide many benefits to cities – heat resilience, flood protection, filtration for polluted water, and neighborhood beautification. We recommend that cities prioritize green infrastructure projects in areas where they can have the greatest positive impact. This includes engaging community members and prioritizing community knowledge when designing and planning projects.

Example:

San Bruno, in partnership with the county’s flood control agency OneShoreline, is participating in an intensive community engagement process to identify and design a project that will reduce flood risks, restore natural habitats, improve water quality, and create more accessible public spaces for surrounding communities. The San Bruno Creek Flood Zone Project will focus on the Belle Air neighborhood, which is the most socially vulnerable and most exposed to flooding in the city. The city is partnering with two community-based organizations – Climate Resilient Communities (CRC) and Rise South City – to develop community leadership capacity so that community members can guide their own flood resilience solutions.
