The Bay Area is home to some of the greatest hikes in the state (and quite possibly the nation). We’ve put together a fun list of some of our favorite local hikes for you to explore. Whether you are seeking a short walk, easy adventure, or a fun day hike, these local spots offer scenic views perfect for a sunrise or sunset hike, fresh air, and a lovely nature escape.

Hikes are organized based on distances, difficulty levels, and if they are pet/dog friendly, so even your pup can enjoy the outdoors.

Easy hikes include, but are not limited to:

Oakland, CA
Huckleberry Botanic Regional Preserve
1.7 mi loop (No dogs allowed) Looking to go on a peaceful walk and see an abundance of native plants, this is the stroll for you.

San Leandro, CA
Heron Bay Trail
2 mi Dog-friendly (on-leash)
Walk the shoreline in San Leandro and enjoy paved and dirt paths that make this an accessible walk for many.

Hayward, CA
Peak & Dry Creek Trail Loop
 2.2 mi (Dog-friendly)
This peaceful hike is great for Creekside views and meadow scenery.

Oakland, CA 

Leona Canyon Trail 
3 mi (Dog-friendly)
Woodland trails that are perfect for a relaxed hike with your dog and great shade.

Moderate hikes include, but are not limited to:

San Francisco, CA
Lands End Trail
3.4–4 mi Dog-friendly (on-leash)
This hike has great views of the Golden Gate Bridge, hidden beaches to explore, and get perfect photo opportunities. Best during sunrise and sunset.

Palo Alto, CA
Baylands Nature Preserve 3–6+ mi options Dog-friendly (on-leash)
This hike is a great opportunity to stop by and revel in the beauty of our Palo Alto Horizontal Levee Project. We highly encourage this trail with great views of the coastal mashes, lots of bird watching, and pet friendly.

Palo Alto, CA
Arastradero Preserve 5–10 mi options Dog-friendly (on-leash)
This is the perfect spot to build your own hike. Start a moderate hike of 5 miles or go on a longer adventure with up to 10mile options. Please plan accordingly a 10 mile hike can range from 3.5hours – 6hours based on your speed and endurance.

Intermediate hikes include, but are not limited to:

Castro Valley, CA / San Leandro, CA
Lake Chabot Regional Park
 5–8+ mi options Dog-friendly (on-leash) 
This hike is perfect for a day trip, we highly encourage spending a majority of your day here as there is plenty to do. Enjoy a nice walk or hike, rent a boat or kayak and paddle out, sit and relax while enjoying a nice lunch surrounded by nature and water.

Hayward, CA 
Garin to Don Castro via High Ridge Loop 11.7 mi (Dog-friendly)
Garin has a variety of hikes to choose from, please do not feel discouraged by the difficulty of the hike above. We encourage you to explore the area and know your limitations. Pack plenty of water and food and enjoy the views of the city. 

Tips for a great hiking experience:

  • Be sure to carry lots of water and bring snacks to enjoy and share while on your hike.  
  • If you are bringing a pet be sure to check that the trail you are on allows them and what the leash rules are.  
  • Dress in layers, as temperatures vary by park.  
  • Be sure to leave no trace, we strongly encourage holding onto your trash until a proper bin to dispose of is available.
