What is the value of a tree to its ecosystem? What is the value of a tree as a resource for humans? What is the carbon cycle? What is a sustainable resource? What is biomass?

Students will debate the value of a tree as a living part of the ecosystem or potential energy as fuel. Students will be able to understand the renewable resource that is woody biomass. Understand the Carbon Cycle, the major processes within it (photosynthesis, combustion) and the effects that carbon has within our atmosphere. Students will use tools and basic math to determine the biomass of a tree.

Students will need a measuring tape. This lesson will work best if students have completed Backyard Botany and Web of Life.
