Come join us at the Palo Alto Baylands to help us clear invasive plants to make room for natives on our newest site! Native plants are the backbone holding the earth at the Palo Alto Baylands together and the invasive species we will be pulling threaten to crowd them out and deprive all species (including humans!) that benefit from healthy salt marshes. Additionally, these native plants will be serving double duty by pulling excessive nutrients from treated waste water from the nearby Palo Alto Waste Water Treatment Plant! This will clean up the water our communities put into the Bay and help prevent algal blooms.
Accessibility: This program will take place on sloped dirt areas accessible via a dirt trail about 500 feet from the Byxbee parking lot. Parking at the Byxbee parking lot can be very limited and additional parking can be found at the Palo Alto Baylands southern parking lot and at the Duck Pond parking lot. There is a flush toilet bathroom at the Byxbee parking lot.
Please dress according to the weather, bring a water bottle and a snack. Gloves, hand picks, foam kneepads and/or other necessary tools will be provided. Pulling invasive plants can involve bending, lifting and walking over uneven terrain. Programs may be cancelled in the event of heavy winds, poor air quality and/or lightning. Save The Bay strives to include volunteers of all abilities in our programs. If you have specific access needs, please reach out to hlim@savesfbay.org to coordinate.
