20,000 years ago San Francisco Bay did not exist. As the ice age ended and ice caps began to melt, sea level rose beginning to shape the Bay as we know it. In the last few centuries as the population of the Bay Area grew, humans have changed the landscape of the Bay, notably filling 90% of the marshes and mudflats at the edge of the shoreline.
