Completing the Bay Trail
An inspiring trail network connecting communities to shoreline parks, open spaces, and stunning vistas.
A 500-Mile Vision
A complete San Francisco Bay Trail will connect every Bay Area community to the shoreline with a continuous, accessible path around the Bay where people can walk, bike, and explore nature close to home.
More than 350 miles of this trail already link many Bay Area communities, offering sweeping views, wildlife habitat, and access to parks and open spaces. Yet 150 miles remain unfinished, many through underserved neighborhoods where access to the Bay is most needed. Completing these trail gaps is both an opportunity and a challenge that requires partnerships, advocacy, and public investment.
Save The Bay is exploring how to carry on this vital work, building on 35 years of progress by the original Bay Trail Project. We’re working to design a strong, sustainable Bay Trail advocacy program to close gaps, improve maintenance and climate resilience, expand public funding, and build a broad community of support for the trail. By engaging many local partners and residents who love the Bay, we can make this 500-mile vision a lasting reality for generations to come.
Why Complete the Bay Trail?
Over seven decades, Save The Bay has fought for increased public access to the Bay that all can enjoy. Our leaders envisioned a necklace of shoreline parks linked with trails that connect everyone to the great natural treasure in our midst. Completing the Bay Trail will improve our quality of life, access to nature and resilience to rising tides, ensuring that everyone in the Bay Area can safely enjoy the shoreline.
